A friend of mine once said, "Now that I have kids, a vacation is not a vacation; it is simply a trip". Although I agree that vacationing with kids can be daunting, with a little planning it can still be an enjoyable vacation for the entire family. Especially when visiting Boston. Jam packed with fun things for the whole family to enjoy, A day in Boston is actually better with your kids in tow (a fact I never realized until I had my own). I've had more fun than I can remember playing at the Boston Children's Museum, spent many a morning watching my little one's eyes light up at the New England Aquarium, and witnessed pure joy as he devoured clam chowder at Legal Seafoods. Start your day at the Boston Children's Museum. Opening at 10am, it is best to arrive early as lines can get long especially during school vacation weeks. This hands on, three story land of exploration and creativity appeals to those in the first decade of their life. Children under 3 can spend time in a special section built just for them (most appropriate for those crawling-just getting comfortable walking) where crawling in encouraged and small scale structures allow little limbs to climb about. While older kids will love the climbing maze that spans the height of the Museum. Scientific experimentation is evident throughout from the physics of the ball room to the building blocks in the construction room. And the cultural diversity of Boston can be found within. Everything is meant to be touched, manipulated and most of it is messy so kids could spend and entire day in this one building.New England Aquarium Giant Ocean Tank — Photo courtesy of New England Aquarium
However, if the morning passes and you've had enough, head to lunch around the corner at Flour for some seriously good baked goods then walk it off as you make your way to the second stop of the day, the New England Aquarium.
Known as one of the best Aquariums in the country, the New England Aquarium is jam-packed with sea life that is both stunningly beautiful and educational. The center of the structure is home to the Giant Ocean Tank where you can see everything from sharks to sea turtles swim on by. And surrounding it, on the first floor, are the loud, funny penguins who seem to always be getting fed. Enjoy the touch tanks and take in a show, but be sure not to miss the smaller tanks throughout each floor because within you'll find many ocean life surprises.
By now, it is dinner time and you'll easily find a selection of eateries right outside. However, with the kids in tow, nothing beats Legal Seafoods for a taste of New England. Their kids menu is filled with your typical favorites like chicken finger, hot dogs and ravioli, but could also dine on a sampling from the sea like 1/2 lobster, wood grilled fish or popcorn shrimp. Striking the perfect balance for parents of picky eaters.Legal Seafood — Photo courtesy of Legal Seafood
With a few fun stops you'll have an entire day planned, rain or shine and all within walking distance of one another. Now just remember to find the perfect family friendly hotel and your time in Boston will be a breeze.
