Land's End for Lovers: The Most Romantic Resorts in Los Cabos

With its warm year-round climate and surfeit of swaying palm trees, gorgeous beaches and spectacular ocean views, Los Cabos has all the requisite ingredients for a first-class romantic getaway destination.

What really puts the destination over the top, however, and what accounts for the enduring popularity of cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo in this regard – not only for romantic getaways, but also destination weddings, anniversaries and renewal of vows ceremonies – is the commitment made by regional resorts and hotels to offer a wide array of romance-oriented activities, amenities, and event services that pair perfectly with the destination’s abundant natural advantages.

Some of these romantic amenities, like Champagne and chocolates, or rose petal strewn suites, can undoubtedly be found almost anywhere. But others, like private yacht excursions for seasonal whale watching, or moonlit “tables for two in the sand” overlooking Land’s End, are definitely more destination specific, or “only in Cabo”.

The best area lodgings, at least as far as romance is concerned, typically fall into one of two categories: adults-only resorts whose entire raison d’etre is romance, and ultra-luxury properties that do everything to the Nth degree, from celebrity chefs and pampering spas to romantic packages, promotions and “special experience” menus.

In the first category locally are adults-only resorts such as Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, a lovely property on the Pacific Coast just north of Cabo San Lucas that showcases a striking resort-within-a-resort concept (complete with private butlers); Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, an exquisitely designed resort set in an upscale development (complete with private marina) just outside of San José del Cabo; Marquis Los Cabos, a resort whose Tourist Corridor charms are on full display from the moment one encounters its breathtakingly designed lobby arch; and Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort and Spa, an aptly named resort whose rooms offer floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of Land’s End, Playa El Médano, and the luxury villas perched on hillsides in the exclusive enclave of Pedregal.

In the latter category are ultra-luxury properties from some of the world’s most famous hospitality brands. Las Ventanas al Paraíso and One&Only Palmilla pioneered Los Cabos style luxury and romance decades ago under late, legendary hotelier Edward Steiner, while Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas is the first resort to open on the Baja California peninsula from the acclaimed Four Seasons brand, with a secluded and magnificently landscaped setting on Los Cabos’ picturesque but more lightly developed East Cape.

Our top choice, however – The Cape, A Thompson Hotel – does not fit neatly into either category. Although certainly romantic, it’s not adults only; and although certainly luxurious, it’s not comparable (in price or prestige) to ultra-luxury resorts like One&Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, or Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal. What The Cape does have is something no other regional resort can match: the absolute perfect location on a legendary surf beach with unmatched Land’s End views that during unforgettable nightly sunsets provides vistas that defy description.

The Cape takes full advantage of this jaw-dropping setting, offering romance-friendly amenities that range from infinity pools to its rooftop lounge, not to mention a signature restaurant helmed by the most famous chef in México.

Las Ventanas al Paraíso means the windows to paradise, and this Rosewood managed seaside resort delivers the expected spectacular views, as well as luxurious accommodations and amenities distinguished by exquisite attention to detail. Eight bars and restaurants promise a variety of memorable dining experiences, highlighted by fresh local seafood and produce from the nearby organic farming community of Miraflores. One&Only Palmilla is regularly rated by travel magazines as the best resort in México, and it's easy to see why. The commitment to service is unmatched in the region, as evidenced by the 3:1 staff-to-guest ratio, and the some five dozen gardeners working constantly to sculpt the lush and luxuriant grounds. The resort has been around since the 1950s – when it was founded by pioneering Los Cabos developer Rod Rodriguez – and it has remained a benchmark area property through several expansions and upgrades, most notably upon receiving the One&Only imprimatur in 2004. In addition to its excellent accommodations and amenities – private butlers are standard – the resort hosts several excellent restaurants, including SEARED steakhouse from celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Upgrades and renovations in recent years include a 22,000 square foot spa, fitness and beauty facility, with Barber&Blade for men, and manicures and pedicures in a studio designed by famed French podiatrist Bastien Gonzalez. Romantic activities for couples are another specialty, with options that range from private yacht whale watching adventures to spa date couples' treatments and private dining experiences.

Recommended for Romantic Hotels because: One & Only Palmilla has been ranked as the best resort in México for over a decade, and specializes in romantic activities for couples.

Few places on earth can match the setting of The Cape: A Thompson Hotel, the new boutique luxury property that opened in June 2015 in the tourist corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The hotel commands sublime views of the evocatively-shaped rock formations at Land's End from its beachfront home on Playa Monumentos, which itself is famed as one of the premier surf sites in Baja California Sur. Architect Javier Sánchez's greatest achievement is making these views available from each of the hotel's 161 rooms and suites, as well as its infinity pool, its acclaimed restaurant, its fashionable rooftop nightclub, its pampering spa…basically, from every available space on the property. The exterior is sleek and contemporary, the décor a nostalgic blending of 1960s moderne and surfer chic. The many black walls, like the black façade, are intended to make the views "pop;" as if there was any doubt of that considering the majestic location. The most notable amenity is Manta, the first Los Cabos restaurant from celebrated Mexican chef Enrique Olvera, who has had two restaurants – Pujol in Mexico City, and Cosme in New York City – ranked among the 100 best in the world.

Recommended for Romantic Hotels because: The Cape features stunning views of Land's End from each of its suites, plus its world-class restaurant and romantic rooftop bar.
