Fine Food, Spectacular Views: The 10 Best Restaurants in Pedregal

Home to sprawling hillside villas and some of the region's most luxurious resorts, Pedregal has long been considered the ritziest neighborhood in Cabo San Lucas. There are no shortage of fine dining options here, although the majority of restaurants are affiliated with area hotels. El Farallon, for example, which features one of the most incredible settings in all of Los Cabos – tables are perched cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean – is set at The Resort at Pedregal, annually ranked as the Land’s End city’s best resort.

Finisterra, among the oldest lodgings in Pedregral, recently became part of the Sandos hotel group, and renovations and upgrades include the elegant appointments and excellent buffet-style dining at Don Diego's. Solmar, another long-time Los Cabos fixture, currently has several hotels and better than half a dozen restaurants under its umbrella, including standouts Brigantiine, Romeo y Julieta, The Ridge Restaurant and Hacienda El Coyote.

The neighborhood's best new restaurant may be Puerto San Lucas, which looks out over the Cabo San Lucas Marina, and features a hearty selection of steaks, pastas and fresh local seafood. Desserts are a particular specialty at Puerto San Lucas – yet another Solmar property – and the restaurant excels at decadent meal cappers like red velvet cheesecake and vanilla crème brulée.

Finisterra dates to Cabo San Lucas' early days as a tourist destination, and was the first of the great Pedregal resorts. It was built by Luis Coppola, with contributions from Luis Bulnes, who went on to found the neighboring Solmar Group of hotels. Finisterra had lost a bit of luster in recent years, so the acquisition of the property by the Spanish Sandos hotel and resort group was welcome in many ways, and numerous renovations and upgrades have already been made. The Blue Marlin restaurant is still around, but visitors will find that the hotel's signature restaurant now is Don Diego, an upscale buffet-themed eatery that features international-style cuisine. The food and service are excellent, and the bay views are magnificent.

Recommended for Pedregal Hills/Pacific Ocean's Best Restaurants because: Don Diego is the signature restaurant at one of Cabo San Lucas' most historically significant hotels.

Chris's expert tip: Try one of their excellent omelets.

The signature onsite restaurant at the all-inclusive Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach specializes in international cuisine, with buffet-style dinners whose themes change on a nightly basis. Popular themes include Retro, Seafood, and Asian nights, and Sunday brunch also draws large crowds. The Pacific Ocean views are stunning, particularly from the shaded terrace dining area. La Nao is one of the best places in Los Cabos to watch a sunset, and during the winter months diners will occasionally catch glimpses of migrating whales. The dining room is quite elegant -ornate chandeliers, Frida Kaho prints, Persian style carpets and showy flower arrangements - and the wine cellar is always well stocked.

Chris's expert tip: The sunset views are spectacular, particularly from the terrace.

Brigantine is one of Pedregal's most popular resort restaurants - it is set just off the oculus-topped lobby at Playa Grande - with a menu that showcases traditional Mexican specialties and fresh local seafood. Diners can sample generous helpings of shrimp and lobster, including molcajetes (a molcajete is a traditional mortar-style stone bowl) stuffed with fish, lobster, shrimp, avocado and melted cheese. Steaks and pastas are also available, including delicious house lasagna. The appointments are upscale casual, with marble floors and hacienda-style accents. Dinner is usually accompanied by live music, and if you reserve in advance, you receive a complimentary bottle of house wine.

The Beach Club is yet another of The Resort at Pedregal's excellent dining options, although not quite in the same class as Don Manuel's or El Farallon. The club offers light fare and upscale tropical elegance, including some gorgeous ocean views from the terrace. This is the perfect spot to sample the local seafood, or enjoy margaritas or mojitos. The ceviches are outstanding, and guests may also enjoy fried Creole soft shell crab, or heirloom tomato gazpacho with crab salad. Gourmet tacos and sandwiches are also offered on the all-day menu, as are sides like grilled corn on the cob, and steamed broccoli with cheese sauce. For more filling fare, ask about market specials and the catch of the day.

Recommended for Pedregal Hills/Pacific Ocean's Best Restaurants because: The Beach Club is one of the top onsite restaurants at Capella Pedregal.

Chris's expert tip: The dessert menu is exceptional. Try the chocolate peanut ice cream, or the marscapone cheese mousse.

Old world Italian-style décor and cuisine are the hallmarks at this popular Cabo San Lucas based eatery, owned and operated by the Solmar hotel and restaurant group, and set at the foot of the city's exclusive Pedregal neighborhood. Chef Matias Forte's menu covers a lot of ground, from antipasti and world-class Caesar salads - hand tossed tableside - to homemade pastas, chicken and veal dishes. Fresh local seafood specialties are also available, notably the Tonno in Crosta (tuna fillet grilled with a crust of sesame and herbs, and accompanied by fettucine and artichoke) and Gamberi e Pancetta (gorgonzola stuffed shrimp wrapped in pancetta, and served on broccoli rosettes). Those with less refined palates can nosh on delicious pizzas made in a mesquite wood-fired oven. Romeo y Julieta has ample seating indoors and out, and can easily handle large groups.

Hacienda El Coyote is another of the more recent additions to Solmar's group of restaurants, and it may be the best of an impressive bunch. Situated on Marina Boulevard near the entrance to Pedregal, the restaurant specializes in regional cuisine, with traditional dishes from Baja California, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla and other Mexican states. Highlights include Cochinita Pibil (Yucatán) and Mole Poblana (Puebla). The Lobster Puerto Nuevo, Ensenada-style, is also a popular option, as are seafood favorites like tequila shrimp and salmon tacos with pineapple and chilies. Speaking of tequila, Hacienda El Coyote boasts more than 200 brands, so this is a mandatory stop for connoisseurs. And cocktail lovers will not regret asking the bartender, whose nickname is Champion, to serve up one of his special Sangre de Coyote martinis.

The Ridge Restaurant is among the toughest tickets in Cabo San Lucas, but for those lucky enough to be staying at the Ridge Luxury Villas at Playa Grande, this is a mandatory stop. The views alone are spectacular. Set beneath a palapa surrounded by infinity pools, a water slide and panoramic views of Pedregal, downtown Cabo San Lucas, and both the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean, this is one of the most breathtaking locations in Los Cabos. The food and service are both first-class as well, and cocktail service is available from a marble column supported swim-up bar. Dining is al fresco, with a focus on seafood. El Farallón's wow-factor asset is a breathtaking cliffside setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the exclusive Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas. The restaurant pairs fresh local seafood with its romantic atmosphere, adding rustic elegant touches to chef Gustavo Pinet's market concept. The fish is fresh daily and diners pick their entrée market style from shaved ice, choosing from a selection of sea bass, red snapper, striped bass, shrimp, tuna, dorado, clams and lobster. The fish is then weighed and taken to the chef to be grilled with an array of fresh chiles. Soups and salads are included with all entrées and rib-eye steaks are available for those who want the views without the seafood. This ranks with Sunset MonaLisa as one of the most romantic dining experiences in all of Los Cabos and the addition of a Champagne terrace has only enhanced the romance factor.

Recommended for Pedregal Hills/Pacific Ocean's Best Restaurants because: El Farallón features one of the most spectacular settings in Los Cabos, with a cliffside dining area that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
