On the Boardwalk: Best Shopping around the Cabo San Lucas Marina

The wide, pedestrian-friendly marina boardwalk in Cabo San Lucas skirts a basin full of fishing boats and million dollar yachts, winding its way from the naval base around to the foot of Médano Beach. To walk from one end to the other takes the better part of 30 minutes, but offers easy access en route to many of the city’s finest shopping malls and plazas.

Puerto Paraíso is the signature shopping center on the boardwalk, with a wide variety of shops, galleries and boutiques. Visitors can work on their tropical wardrobe at Cabo Style, browse the latest ladies’ beach and swimwear fashions at Zingara and Tropica Calipso, search for new shoes at Baja Star, and find chic, sun-shading headwear at Cabo Hats. International chains are also represented – notably Kenneth Cole and Lacoste – and those seeking the toniest of brand names can continue their perambulations next door at Luxury Avenue, home to upscale standard bearers like Cartier, Fendi and Ultrajewels.

Plaza Gali is another popular marina-based shopping option. Located directly across from the cruise ship terminal, it serves as a sort of one-stop shopping destination for passengers on the way in or out of Cabo San Lucas. Fiesta Mexicana offers traditional arts and crafts, jewelry stores showcase Mexican silver and fire opals, and a duty free shop, pharmacy, and convenience store provide just about everything else. Plus, there is a Starbuck’s kiosk for morning caffeine fixes, and a Señor Frog’s handy for afternoon and evening pleasures like margaritas and fish tacos.

Harley Davidson Los Cabos is located at Puerto Paraíso, the Marina based shopping mall in Cabo San Lucas, and features a full line of gear, from shirts, pants, wallets and hats to handbags and leather jackets. The place is not just for souvenir hunters, however. Harley Davidson Los Cabos also offers motorcycle rentals. Hit the open roads of Baja California Sur on a Heritage Softail Classic, Road King Classic, or Touring Road Glide. Bikes may be arranged for one or more days, with unlimited mileage. A U.S. or Mexican driver's license is required.

Hats are a major fashion accessory in Los Cabos, where the sun shines over 350 days a year. And whether it's a hip Panama for the guys, or a floppy beach lid for the gals, Cabo Hats is the area's go-to spot for tropical headwear. The company specializes in fashionable sun protection, from baseball caps to the latest beach and boating styles for men, women and children. All hats and fashions are part of the Scala collection, produced by the U.S. based brand Dorfman Pacific, and hat materials include raffia, seagrass, panama and crocheted cotton. Straw and canvas hand bags and accessories are also available.

Although best known for fantastical sculptures like En Busca de la Razón (In Search of Reason) on Puerto Vallarta's malecón, idiosyncratic Sinaloa native Sergio Bustamante has also earned acclaim for paintings, ceramics, jewelry and handbags during a career that has spanned nearly 50 years. One of México's most instantly recognizable artists, Bustamante now boasts galleries on four continents, as well as numerous examples of notable public art. His gallery in Cabo San Lucas is located on the first floor of the marina-based Puerto Paraíso shopping center, and is open daily from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Whether shopping or sightseeing, a pair of comfortable shoes is an essential item for Los Cabos visitors. Baja Star, a regional chain with stores throughout the state, is the premier local stop for sporty kicks for men, women and children. Name brand sneakers from the likes of Nike, Reebok and Adidas are available, as are more boutique items from upscale brands like Ralph Lauren's Polo. There are two stores in Cabo San Lucas: one in Puerto Paraíso, the Marina based shopping mall, and another a few blocks downtown, on Calle José María Morelos. Sports related shirts and other gear are also available.

Women's swimwear specialist Tropica Calipso has two locations in Los Cabos: at Puerto Paraíso Mall on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, and at Las Tiendas de Palmilla near San José del Cabo. Both shops from the boutique bikini purveyor feature excellent options for sunning and swimming, including mix and match and separates from the popular California Waves and Endless Sun collections. Ladies may choose from a large selection of fashionable bathing suits, with styles that include triangles, underwires, bandeaus, tankinis, tangas and rios in a wide array of tropical colors and designs. Sarongs and cover-ups are also available, as are other beach-friendly accessories. All sizes stocked up to DD.

Plaza Bonita

Plaza Bonita is one of the larger shopping plazas in Cabo San Lucas. It's located on the marina boardwalk, near Puerto Paraíso, and counts among its tenants several popular nightclubs (Hard Rock Cafe, Knotty Social Club, Nowhere Bar) and restaurants (Alexander, Tiki Bar), the town's only Starbuck's and Burger King franchises, as well as a clothing boutique (Dos Lunas) and galleries showcasing traditional Mexican arts and crafts. The courtyard is spacious, and a condo complex sits atop several commercial properties, offering superb views of the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The condos are often available for rental by the week or month, and guests have access to a communal terrace with a pool, hot tub, and outdoor grill.

Luxury Avenue is a high-end, boutique mall situated next to Puerto Paraíso on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The mall is accessible from Puerto Paraíso, but it is much more fun to walk the red carpet that is frequently used to guide the chosen few from the marina boardwalk up the stairs to Cabo's most prestigious address. Luxury Avenue is located in the heart of what is referred to as the Marina Golden Zone, and it is certainly the area's most expensive shopping center. If you need to pick up a trendy Fendi Bag or the latest fashions from Salvatore Ferragamo, this is the place to go. Luxury Avenue is home to chic boutiques from around the world, including Chopard, Cartier, Montblanc, Ultrafemme and Ultrajewels. There is another Luxury Avenue location in Cancún.

What's the essence of the Los Cabos style? Puerto Paraíso Mall based boutique Cabo Style is the place to find out. From swimsuits and flip flops to shirts, sunglasses and upscale tropical fashions, Cabo Style has all the gear you'll need to hit the local beaches, dine at the coolest seaside restaurants, and party at the most popular late night bars and clubs. Need white linen trousers or a pair of Quicksilver shades? No worries. And unlike other local clothing shops, which primarily cater to women, Cabo Style has excellent options for the entire family, including souvenir t-shirts for kids.

As the closest plaza to the cruise ship terminal, Plaza Gali is sort of a microcosm of the larger Cabo San Lucas shopping experience. All the types of shops one can expect to find downtown - jewelry stores, arts and crafts purveyors, pharmacies, sunglasses boutiques, duty free shops - are found here first. Tourist-oriented food and drink options too are on hand, including a Starbucks coffee kiosk, and a Señor Frog's bar and grill. Activities can also be arranged, most notably at Manta, one of the area's premier dive shops. There is even an OXXO (a Mexican convenience store similar to 7-11 in the U.S.), where one can grab cold drinks and snacks.

Cabo San Lucas' large Marina-based mall is a multi-level complex with an excellent variety of shops, boutiques and galleries. General services and sundries are also available, including an onsite pharmacy and a bank. Puerto Paraíso hosts many fine arts and crafts galleries offering handmade goods from México and beyond, and there are a large number of clothing boutiques featuring the latest swimwear and resort style clothing. Dining options are noteworthy, with upscale American chain Ruth's Chris Steak House, and top local restaurants like Señor Sweets and Baja Brewing Company. A food court was also recently opened on the mezzanine level. Entertainment options include a 10-theater cinema. Individual business hours vary.
