Find the Best Things to Do in Akumal

About Akumal
Akumal (the place of the turtles) is located about 60 miles south of Cancun. Its name comes from the fact that sea turtles spend a lot of time munching on sea grass in Akumal Bay. Visitors can snorkel just a few yards off shore and witness this firsthand. (Please, no touching!) Akumal is still quite undeveloped and has a very small downtown area, hotels, shops and that relaxed laid back atmosphere that tropical vacation dreams are made of.
See & Do
Akumal is a place of tropical natural wonders. White sand beaches hug various protected bays where visitors can snorkel with sea turtles just a few yards off shore. (It is important to note that humans should never touch or disturb the turtles.) Explore the secrets below the surface of sparkling Yal-Ku Lagoon, just a few minutes outside of downtown.
Eat
You won’t find a McDonald’s or any other chain restaurants in sleepy Akumal. What you will find is casual ambiance and delicious food. If you’re traveling with your family dine at Lol Ha while your children have a blast at their kids club. “Fast food” in Akumal consists of taco stands in the part of town where the locals live (across the highway from the beach). Always look for the busiest stand. A must, a meal and drinks at La Buena Vida, one of Akumal's most popular restaurants.
Stay
There is only one all inclusive resort in Akumal, Akumal Beach Resort, but this small town is home to many beachfront condominiums, rental homes and small, privately-owned hotels. Rent a condo or home for privacy or choose the Vista Del Mar Hotel on Half Moon Bay for a quiet stay with a beautiful view.
