El Meco is a small archaeological site of Mayan ruins, located just north of Cancun, near the Puerto Juarez ferry dock. The site has only been open for a few years and there are no organized tours offered at this time. To get to the location, you will have to hire a taxi for a few hours, or rent a car. On most days, you will have the entire park to yourself but, sometimes there are school children there for a class trip. There is a well-preserved pyramid in the center of the former city. The top of the pyramid can be seen from nearby bodies of water. For that reason, the pyramid was believed to be a landmark for sailors looking for El Meco and the site is said to have been a major port for the Mayan people. This is a very quiet, peaceful park and, even though you can see the entire place is less than an hour, you might want to sit on one of the benches found throughout the park and relax for a while. It's a small, but lovely, park and should be "must see" for any history buff or for people that enjoy visiting attractions that are off-the-beaten-path.
