If you want a classic piece of western atmosphere during your stay in the mountains of Lake Tahoe, spend a few nights in the River Street Inn in downtown Truckee. This quaint bed and breakfast is right on the Truckee River and the railroad (bring ear plugs), and is just a few steps from the shopping and restaurants of old town Truckee.

Innkeepers Wendy and Matt have retained the classic look of this home from 1885, but have added modern amenities like a full kitchen, baths and a great room with comfortable furniture for lounging and reading. The rooms have queen size beds with down comforters and the baths have claw foot tubs. They also have a newly-renovated family suite, which sleeps up to six people, and a 900 square-foot apartment. Large windows are available in all rooms for some great views of the mountains and town. The Truckee River — Photo courtesy of River Street Inn
The River Street Inn serves a small continental breakfast in the morning, but the kitchen is available for your use any hour of the day. Rates are $115-130 for midweek and $155-$170 for weekends. Nearby are some great restaurants including Pianeta Ristorante, which serves excellent Italian food, Moody's Bistro which has a great bar and excellent jazz and the Cottonwood, which has a friendly bar and dishes like Crusted Southeast Asian Basa and Butternut Squash Enchiladas, as well as a fantastic view of the town of Truckee from its patio and huge windows.
