About Truckee

This historic city takes you back to the time of gunslingers and pioneers as you tour the old jail, the Red Light district, the Chinese herb shop, and the depot. Truckee also boasts a wide variety of shops, B&Bs, art galleries, and restaurants. One of the town's more fascinating sites is the Donner Monument at Donner Memorial Park, where visitors can learn about the famous Donner Party pioneers. Truckee is a 35 minute drive from North Lake Tahoe.

See & Do

There is another large lake besides Tahoe in this area: Donner Lake State Park is home to Donner Lake, named after the infamous Donner Party. This group of pioneers in 1846 became trapped here during a massive blizzard and a few of the members resorting to cannibalism. The park is home to a small marina, a resort, some public docks and a museum.

Eat

Truckee has made a name for itself for having some of the best restaurants in the area. The nationally-renowned Moody's Bistro serves great salads, seafood and desserts. The cozy Pianeta Ristorante offers hearty and exquisite Italian dishes and the Cottonwood, on a hill above Truckee, has a wonderful view of the town.
