Green chile cheeseburgers are one of the city's most iconic dishes. Everyone has a favorite. The juicy burgers at Santa Fe Bite (formerly Bobcat Bite) are the hands-down winner for the title of "best". Made from a mix of natural New Mexico chuck and sirloin, seasoned with Bonnie Eckre's secret mix and cooked on well-seasoned cast-iron grills, they rock. The original restaurant opened on Old Las Vegas Highway in 1953. Bonnie and her husband John bought it in 2003. Their burgers have garnered national attention from culinary and travel magazines as well as food books and travel guides. In August 2013 they moved downtown and changed their name to Santa Fe Bite. The new bright airy digs are a far cry from the original, but the burgers remain the same. The Bite, open daily for lunch and dinner (except Mondays), serves breakfast on weekends and closes at 6p.m. on Sundays.
- Best Restaurants: "If you don't have a huge appetite, order the new 6 oz. burger. Save room for one of .Bonnie Ekre's homemade desserts (if they aren't sold out). Don't want to wait for a table? Arrive by 11:30 for lunch or 5:30 for dinner."
- Recommended as Best Restaurants Because: Green chile cheeseburgers are one of the most popular dishes in Santa Fe and The Bite is widely acknowledged to make the best.
