A Sag Harbor treasure for its rich diversity of wildlife and stunning natural beauty, this 180+-acre refuge was founded by the state in 1954, following a gift from Elizabeth Morton. Located between Noyack and Little Peconic Bays, the refuge is home to migratory and threatened/endangered birds – the piping plover, osprey, goldeneye, and oldsquaw, to name but a few – making it a favorite destination for birdwatchers. The landscape itself is worth a few snapshots too, given that a large portion of the refuge extends onto Jessups Neck, a peninsula whose shores are protected as nesting areas.
