Block's Cafe in Portland: Fresh, Home Cooked Food

This new restaurant serves food handmade with tasty, local ingredients

Block’s is a charming, new neighborhood café on SE Clinton Street in Portland. It may be new, but do not be surprised to see some familiar faces here. Shana Lane-Block, the café’s owner, recently closed her first restaurant, Compote, at this location and has now reopened with a new look and a new menu as Block’s. Lane-Block did keep Compote’s popular breakfast cookies and a few other favorites on the menu.

At Block’s, you can expect fresh, made-from-scratch home cooking, including housemade items like fresh baked breads, pastries and chicken sausage patties. The food is prepared from local ingredients and inspired from Shana’s experience working in LA at farm-to-table restaurants as well as her own family meals she grew up on living on the East coast. Block's also has many gluten-free and vegan options.

Block’s serves breakfast all day. For breakfast, you can try their mouthwatering gluten-free yogurt pancakes, served with real maple syrup, or try the Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich with cheese, egg and one of their outstanding homemade chicken sausage patties. They also serve homemade latkes.

Lunch at Block’s is just as good as breakfast. They offer a variety of sandwiches like egg salad, tuna salad, gravlax and the to-die-for turkey Reuben made with house brined and roasted turkey. But their Reuben is not their only standout lunch item; their amazing coleslaw just might be the best in Portland.

Block’s also features a grab-and-go market, where many of their items are available to go, making it a great place to grab a last minute dinner. The grab-and-go market will feature sandwiches, soup, turkey meatloaf, coleslaw and much more.

Block's is kid-friendly, and for families, Block’s offers an extensive kid’s menu without any fried food. Kids can select from a variety of pancakes, eggs, and sandwiches. All meals are priced at $4 or $5. Kids will love Block’s hot chocolate and their unique NYC Egg Cream: a chocolate milk soda.

Block’s boasts an assortment of desserts like pastries, cookies, cakes, muffins and pudding. Block's also features an assortment of drinks, including alcoholic beverages like cocktails, beer and wine. Non-alcoholic beverage choices include coffee, lattes, mochas, juice, hot and cold teas and more.

Block’s restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Block’s is located between Division Street and Powell Boulevard at 2032 SE Clinton Street.
