For many years now, Portland has had a hotel shortage, especially when it came to an affordable place to stay.

The Society Hotel, a boutique-style hostel opened in late 2015, has helped fulfill that huge need. Finally, Portland has an affordable lodging option downtown!

The Society Hotel: Then and Now

The Society Hotel was originally built as a 3-story building in 1880, serving as a safe place for seamen to stay. At some point, the whole building was lifted up and the bottom floor was open. The rooms upstairs sat empty from 1942 until the current owners took over and transformed it into Portland's newest hotel.

The Society Hotel offers a 24-bed bunk room, 38 private rooms and suites, with rates as low as $35/night for a bunk and a night in a suite is also affordable. Some of the private rooms are shared bath and some have private baths. No matter which type of lodging you choose, you will enjoy free wifi.

The bunk room is for women or men, and each bunk features curtains, outlets and reading lights. Each of the bunk headboards doubles as storage. Plus, there's a coin laundry available, lockers and a kitchen just for those staying in the bunk room.

One-of-a-Kind Amenities at The Society Hotel

Personal Concierge

The concierge not only welcomes you to the hotel, but also becomes your 24/7 guide to the hotel and city. They are at your every beck and call via text message. You can text them 24 hours a day, and they will respond to you with directions. They might even provide the code to that speakeasy's hidden door.

Adventure Cards

These cards on the bulletin board provide guests with ideas for adventurous day trips around the area, like hiking out in the Gorge area. They also suggest additional recommendations based on the guests’ first card choice. "If you like this, then you may also enjoy . . ."

Rooftop Deck

You can enjoy 360-degree views of the downtown skyline and surrounding area while relaxing with friends or reading your favorite book. On the weekends, guests can sample local wines on the rooftop deck.

Acoustic Concerts

As a Society guest, you can enjoy private acoustic music performances once a month. They're held either on the roof or in the lobby, depending on the weather.
