Lima has some very nice beaches easily accessible at its Costa Verde, where you can find all kind of services; Miraflores and/or Barranco public beaches on this Costa Verde Circuit are very easy to access, but you may find them a bit packed, depending on the time of the year.
So, you may want to do what many upperscale Limenians do: escaping to Lima South Beaches, located at or near the Km. 40 of Panamericana Sur road: However, San Bartolo is the friendliest and the one that reunites more different attractions, especially during summers: nature, beach life, kid-friendly spots, beach sports, nightlife, motocross, history, restaurants for all budgets, etc., all in a quiet and relaxing beach town. You could rent a car or hire a minivan driver to take you there. But there’s no need to: you can use public transportation. You will need to take two buses (one to get to the Panamericana Sur and then the San Bartolo bus) for a 90 minutes ride, but the whole trip costs only S/. 4 soles (a bit more than one dollar).
San Bartolo has different beach areas. Surfers will love Ribera Norte and El Peñascal, both with good, big waves: in fact, some official international competitions have been hosted here. On the other hand, Ribera Sur beach is a quiet and safe beach, perfect for swimming and for other nautic sports, as well as for relaxing. And there’s the possibility of practicing motocross on the hills nearby the town. San Bartolo - Ribera Sur — Photo courtesy of El Tropicologo
There are two major popular religious (Catholic) celebrations: the Inmaculate Conception (December 8th), and Saint Peter and Saint Paul (June 29th), when the fishermen take their patron saints in a pittoresque procession of boats. The best time to be here is obviously in summer (December to March), but it is also a nice and quiet choice in winter if you are looking for some solitude or for a hideaway from the noisy city. [PHOTO_218723]
