Inaugurated in 1966 and inspired by San Francisco's Golden Gate in the United States, Lisbon's stately suspension bridge links the city with its south bank. It was originally called Ponte Salazar in deference to the Portuguese dictator who had it built but was renamed after the revolution of 25 April 1974. Spanning for half a mile over the River Tagus the road bridge also accommodates a railway line. It's not possible to walk across it, and there are no observation platforms on the towers. However, sightseers can enjoy splendid views from the Alcantara and Docas districts although the most outstanding aspect is from the top of the Cristo Rei monument on the south bank at Almada.
