Being French, Gilles and Amandine know a thing or two about wine. Originally hailing from Paris, the couple relocated to Lisbon and later opened Madame Bacchus. They quickly discovered that the wines of Portugal are as equally appealing as those from their native country. Located in the city's trendy Sao Mamede district, Madame Bacchus features a wine list of around 90 reds and whites representing nearly every region of the country. Gilles works for the most part with smaller wineries whose yearly output numbers no more than 4,000 bottles. This way he can offer a more focused and exclusive range of labels, and the wine list is impressive! Exceptional wines include Pagina, which comes from the Lisbon wine region, Quinta de Saes, from the Dao, and Quinta Seara d'Ordens, a Douro wine. One of Gilles' favorites is an Alentejo wine, Quinta do Mouro. Nearly very wine is sold by the glass, and wines can be sampled in a small measure before purchase. Madame Bacchus is also a restaurant, and the emphasis is on healthy and wholesome dishes: vegetarians and vegans won't be disappointed. Indeed, Amandine takes great pride in presenting the dishes, whether at lunch or dinner time. On most Saturday evenings live music is presented, with Gilles sometimes playing guitar. Check their Facebook page for performance dates.

Lisbon Local Expert
- Wine Bars: "A most agreeable introduction to Madame Bucchus is to opt for the Lisbon wine label tastings of three reds and three whites."
- Best for Wine Bars Because: Run by a charming husband and wife team, Madame Bacchus' wines are all about quality rather than quality.
