Waiters and waitresses know all too well the gap between lunch and dinner when business is slow and “busy work” commences. Newport Gourmet Tours have found a way to utilize this time when chefs are prepping for dinner by offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at some of Newport’s favorite restaurants. The foodie scene in Newport is exploding with high-end eateries, celebrity chefs, food trucks, and mom-and-pop venues – all showcased at the annual Wine and Food Festival. Newport Gourmet Tours will give visitors a chance to meet some of these artisan chocolate makers, cheesemongers, wine specialists, and pasta makers who have set up shop in the city. Some shops along the tour — Photo courtesy of Newport Gourmet
Newport Gourmet offers two walking tour options: a stroll down high-end Bellevue Avenue or the local side of town on Broadway. Both are led by a professional chef and span approximately two miles and last two hours. The Bellevue tour begins at the legendary Hotel Viking - which has housed royalties and celebrities - for a peak into the kitchen and a chance to meet and chat with the chef. After, the group will visit a restaurant that used to be a casino, explore other shops, sample wine and cheese, and take in a chocolate-making lesson.
The Broadway tour winds down “restaurant row” and begins at historic White Horse Tavern. The tour leads past under-the-radar establishments (like a bakery, ice cream shop, and Mexican restaurant) and wraps up with an opportunity to try some of Newport’s infamous fresh seafood. Tour guides also provide a wealth of knowledge of the town and its rich history. For either tour, bring comfortable shoes and make reservations far in advance. Some shops along the tour — Photo courtesy of Newport Gourmet
