Designed by the 'Father of Modernist Architecture' Luis Domenech, Hotel Espanya has always been considered more of an off the beaten path accommodation, catering to those looking for an unassuming, comfortable stay in one of Barcelona's liveliest and most 'full on' neighborhoods; the Raval. Inaugurated in 1859, the hotel has recently undergone a series of ‘reformas’ (renovations) combining a refreshing mix of interior modernism with a classic 19th century façade. Part of the hotel’s new look and feel has included signing renowned chef, Martin Berasategui, known for his gastronomic genius. His menu can be enjoyed in the hotel’s dining room, which has also been remodeled and resembles that of a grand ballroom. Even with the hotel's restoration it still manages to hold onto its rustic elegance, which gives you the sensation of being in a a first class hotel, without an ostentatious vibe.
