Madrid’s Fuencarral Street is a hip, popular shopping avenue that serves as the border between the Malasaña and Chueca neighborhoods. While there are a lot of choices on the dinner and drinks scene just a stone’s throw away, there isn't much competition on Fuencarral proper. That might have changed, though, with the addition of Mérimée Gastrobar.
The new restaurant and cocktail lounge is modern and stylish, and tends to draw a young crowd: the top floor is tastefully decorated with large mirrors and armchairs, while the bottom floor has blue and purple lights with more of a lounge feeling.
A little gimmicky perhaps, but Mérimée effectively draws attention to its cocktails with its themed cocktail menus. One memorable menu evokes the main character from the TV show Mad Men, Don Draper, with classic American cocktails like the old fashioned and mint julep, while another menu suggests a life of passionate travels with sweet and fruit-heavy cocktails like the cosmosutra and mai tai.
If you’re not in the mood for a full meal, but don’t want to drink on an empty stomach, Mérimée has a good selection of modern tapas like mini hamburgers, varied croquettes and fried eggplant with ham shavings.
