Widely appreciated for its vibrant nightlife and historical associations with Spain’s greatest writers, the Santa Ana and Huertas area is also popularly known as the Literary Quarter. Here locals and visitors alike come to enjoy the area’s interesting cafes, fun jazz bars and homages to Spanish literary greats like Cervantes, Quevedo, Lope de Vega, Calderón and Galdós.

From the gold-lettered literary quotes on the pavement to the sounds of thundering applause when the curtain closes, it is clear that literature, art, music and theater have made their home here over the centuries. Come to appreciate cultural institutions like the Teatro Español and Ateneo, literary and historical homages like the Lope de Vega Museum, and the fun atmosphere of Santa Ana Square. 

Eat

If you find yourself hungry and in the Santa Ana and Huertas area, then your stomach should be smiling. The sheer number and variety of restaurants and bars packed into each block is staggering. However, the problem soon becomes a different one, namely “Where should we eat first?”
