The Iglesia de San Pedro el Viejo is one of Madrid's oldest churches. While written evidence of the church dates to 1202, the church on its current site was built in the 14th century and then modified in the 17th century. In fact, San Pedro el Viejo's most distinctive feature is its original 30 meter tall brick tower, built in the 14th century in Mudejar style.
The church is known for its 18th century statue of Jesus el Pobre, which every year is carried in the well-attended Maundy Thursday processions. At the end of the procession, the statue bows before the Virgen del Dulce Nombre.
