One half of the entire zoo is devoted to the "Wilds of Africa," and it comes complete with more than 80 species of African animals like alligators, gorillas, lions, giraffes, elephants, tigers, penguins and rhinos. You can make this part of your visit even more special by doing a few optional activities, like feeding the giraffes and catching a live animal show that usually features new baby animals at the zoo.
If you're visiting during lunch or dinner time, you can dine alongside the lions at an onsite restaurant in the exhibit. And a trip to Africa is simply not complete without taking a ride on the fun Safari Monorail.
The other side of the zoo holds even more surprises and delights for visitors of all ages. Kids will love, love, love the Lacerte Family Children's Zoo, which features pony rides, bird feedings, baby sheep, miniature goats, donkeys, pot-bellied pigs and rabbits.
There's even a bubbling fountain called Raccoon Springs, a place where kids can dip their hands, and The Stream, a rock-lined babbling brook where little ones can take off their shoes and splash around.
In the older portion of the Dallas Zoo is also "Primate Place," which features a wide variety of different types of monkeys, including two new baby monkeys. While you're over in this part of the zoo, be sure to make a stop to meet the pandas and koalas. Little kids will also love the train ride in this area of the park. In one of the far corners of the older part of the zoo, visitors can pay a small fee to ride camels.
Cap off your trip with a ride on the marvelous carousel. This beautiful ride is also a work of art, as it features tons of different types of animals, lights and music.
And then don't forget to stop into the gift shop. Visitors can find African-themed artwork and decorations for the home, t-shirts and other clothing and a ton of toys and animals for the little ones.
