Housed in a renovated old Bangkok cinema, this heritage stay is certainly unique. The Prince Theatre began in 1912 as a casino and Chinese opera hall, and then became a silent movie theatre. Years later, it showed Hollywood blockbusters and was one of the city's most popular cinemas, but then fell prey to the arrival of multiplex and mall theatres. Eventually, it became a porn cinema, but this also didn't last with the arrival of videos and the internet, and the old building fell into ruin.
Today, it has been returned to its former glory, and is now a heritage stay. Rooms are themed after the various incarnations of the Prince; from Chinese opera to naughty flicks, and black and white movies are shown on the original giant screen in the lobby each night.
The Art Deco stained glass window and original theatre sign have been preserved, as has the old projector, and lovers of old buildings and classic film will find plenty of nostalgia here. Fittingly, the Prince is located in one of Bangkok's oldest communities, and there is an incredible array of award-winning street food, Chinese medicine shops, and other shophouse stores just outside, making for one of Bangkok's most atmospheric venues.
