It's hard to know what is the most enjoyable facet of this fantastic addition to the Bangkok dining scene. The intimate yet lively and homey interior, the feel good story behind the restaurant (American couple who met teaching English in China got married, and decided to open a restaurant based on some of their favorite comfort food), or the amiable owners and superb service, but all these things pale when compared to the outstanding food. Smokin' Pug (named after the owners' pet dog along with the restaurant's barbecue focus) specializes in good old fashioned American southern barbecue, featuring a menu full of quality slow smoked meats and other American comfort staples like home baked beans, coleslaw, and cornbread. The highlight for most diners are the baby back ribs, dry rubbed in secret seasonings and topped with Kansas City-style sauce. A full rack, or a half rack combined with half a barbecued chicken, served with coleslaw, beans, and cornbread, feeds two, and there might even be leftovers. Other winners include imported New Zealand brisket plates, pulled pork tacos or chili, and excellent nachos. Well poured drinks complement the food, with a selection of innovative cocktails like a Smokin' Mary (Tito's Texas Craft Vodka combined with barbecue sauce and tomato juice) or the house favorite Dana's Choice, which combines Makers Mark Kentucky Bourbon with fresh ginger and spicy ginger beer. Everyone walking out of the Pug has a smile on, and its easy to see why, as the whole package makes it one of Bangkok's most inviting dining options these days.
