In Bangkok, despite the abundance of incredible cuisine, one often has to compromise. If you want outstanding authentic Thai food, you have to hit the streets, where it is cheap, tasty, and made for locals. Unfortunately this also means being willing to sit outdoors in the heat and humidity, and usually on an uncomfortable plastic stool. On the other side, fine dining means great atmosphere, but too often toned-down food. Thus, the arrival of Bangkok Heightz makes for good middle ground, or should we say upper ground, given its lofty position. The restaurant literally elevates authentic Thai cuisine to a new level, as it takes age-old Thai favorites and serves authentic and snazzy renditions of them up in a stunning location, 38 floors above the streets at the top of The Continent Hotel. The intimate tables look out over the Bangkok cityscape, making for one romantic evening, and the classic menu (which features writeups and descriptions on the history of Thai cuisine and Bangkok life) uses premium ingredients such as giant prawns for the tom yum goong, succulent soft-shelled crab served with black pepper and salted egg, and Australian lamb shank, which is served in a traditional Massaman curry. Signature cocktails compliment the food, and with views to die for, it makes for one fine evening out.
