The footballer David Beckham has played a lot of different roles in his time, and there's nothing he likes more than being an ambassador for his own country, the UK. He has played for England more times than at least his baby daughter Harper has had hot dinners probably and so it's perhaps not a surprise that his latest role is as a tourist guide for the UK. Well, not quite, but as part of his job as London Olympics ambassador, he's selected a list of 10 places in London and the UK which he loves to visit when he's on this side of the Pond, starting with an East End favourite, the Pie and Mash Shop. He's chosen one of his locals (to where he grew up in East London) in Waltham Forest and put Tony Lane's Pie and Mash Shop in Essex as some 'cockney grub' that you must try if you want the authentic British experience. If your tastes run more along the lines of Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, then you might prefer to follow his other dining suggestions of the Cecconi's in Mayfair or Nopi for something a bit more upmarket and central.
Not surprisingly perhaps, him being a sports star, he also encourages soccer fans to go and visit the spiritual home of football, London's Wembly stadium, or his own old alma mater, Manchester United at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Being the father of four kids, his list includes lots of fun things for children to do, including checking out the amusement parks at Alton Towers or Thorpe Park for thrills, spills and plenty of laughs.
This being a bit of a Royal Year, with the celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee barely over, it's perhaps not surprising that he suggests a tour of Buckingham Palace as a good thing to do if you want to nose inside the appartments of state, and find out a bit more about the British Royal Family and Queen Elisabeth II. Mr Beckham and his wife Victoria were of course invited last year to the wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton, and he mentions this experience with fond memories.
Footballers, in between very intense training, have quite a lot of down time, and many of them often spend it on the Golf course with their team mates. David Beckham is no exception, he suggests you pop up to Scotland to play a round of golf on the old course at St Andrews, a beautiful old course with great views out to sea, and bonus, you can walk around the old town and imagine where Prince William and Katherine Middleton first sealed their love with a kiss when they met at St Andrews during their university years.
Harry Potter the books and films were written by British national J K Rowling, and in 2012, a Harry Potter tour opened up, which will thrill and delight all fans of the books and the films, taking you in to a wonderful magical world of the teenage wizard as he fights the evil Voldemort.
London's theatre scene is thriving, and plays like War Horse have even made it to celluloid and the Stephen Spielberg touch. David Beckham loves to take in a show when he's in town, and suggests War Horse or Jersey Boys as must sees if you have the time.
Shopping is a favourite pastime it seems of both Mr and Mrs Beckham. Not only are they always impeccably turned out, but they also model for many of the desginers whom they favour, and Victoria even has her own fashion line. So one of the things on the Beckham must dos is a spot of shopping. He suggests Manchester's Northern Quarter or markets in London like Portobello, Camden and Spitalfields, near London's Liverpool Street Station.
After all that shopping, and especially if you've got kids, you might want to kick back and relax in one of the many green spaces which criss cross London. David Beckham recommends the royal parks, Hyde Park, Regent's Park or Richmond park, complete with deer for the animal lovers amongst you.
Lastly, if you've got the time for a short trip out to the countryside, then a walk in the country finished off with lunch or dinner in a traditional pub is David's last suggestion, that way you can check out some great British cuisine and see the green and pleasant land that our nation is so famous for.
What better way to enjoy a visit to Britain than following David Beckham's itinerary. And that's probably what the folks at Visit Britain, the British tourist board thought too, as they've featured him in their celebrity campaign to get people checking out some new and interesting facets of our Isles. You can download his app from Samsung to follow him step by step, and allow you to bend it like Beckham too.
