If you want to know how the Docklands area of London developed, from Roman times, through its seafaring trading days, on to the financial trading which generates the money and power today, then starting at the Museum of London Docklands would be a good start. There are lots of other museums in this area too, related to sea trading and the sugar, tea, spices, silks, people and wild animals which brought London to the world and the world to London. And they are all worth a look in, as is a dedicated history tour, which will take you on a walk through the old cobbled streets lit by lanterns, and then under Blade runner-esque steel, concrete and glass structures, down winding alleys and in to cosy pubs, as you discover the fascinating past, present and future of the Docklands.
