Avalanche Records is an Edinburgh institution and it occupied various premises in the center of the city before settling in the Grassmarket. This independent music shop offers up vinyl and CDs along with a range of other music-related goodies from DVDs to t-Shirts. It has long been a staunch supporter of the local music scene in Edinburgh and across Scotland. This is one of the few places you’ll be able to find music by some genuinely homegrown Edinburgh acts.

You can spend an hour or two browsing new and secondhand vinyl in here, and you’ll find the friendly staff is very knowledgeable. Avalanche Records works hard to support the local music scene, so you’ll turn up music from unsigned Scottish bands and little known acts amid big indie bands and classics. They have even hosted the odd in-store gig over the years, such as British Sea Power (pictured).
If you lament the death of independent music stores and you want to experience and support the local Edinburgh music scene, then go and buy something at Avalanche. Visitors to Edinburgh can go home with something truly unique and evangelize their home countries upon their return with the finest in obscure Scottish music.
