Tupiniquim describes itself as Brazil in a Box, but is also a cinema, concert hall and puppet theatre! This diminutive street food stall located by the Green Police Box at the corner of Lauriston Place close to Edinburgh University has really made a name for itself and serves some really delicious food to hundreds of happy patrons every day. The menu consists of gluten free crepes (they can even do a vegan version if you ask) packed with an assortment of fresh fillings and delicious fruit smoothies. The menu changes from day to day, but the food never disappoints, and the vendor is chatty and friendly. The food here may be simple, but it is delicious and very healthy.

This luxury seafood restaurant can be found just off the Royal Mile in the heart of the Old Town. It opened in 2009 with a mission to bring fresh, sustainable, delicious seafood to the Edinburgh restaurant scene and there's no doubt it has accomplished that aim. The Scottish Restaurant of the Year award from the Good Food Guide should give you some idea of how good the food here is. You'll find amazing Scottish produce on offer and there's a restaurant and an oyster bar, so whether you want a full meal or just some champagne and oysters, you won't be sorry you came to Ondine to get it.

Simon's expert tip: If you're in a rush try the Oyster Bar for a great selection of wine and whisky, delicious oysters, and a lively atmosphere.
The aim at Urban Angel is to provide the people of Edinburgh with seasonal, organic, local produce. They offer a range of sit-in or take away options and they have a tasty brunch menu. You can opt for healthy, with porridge or muesli, or you can get a decent fry up. They even offer Arbroath smokies – a real treat for fish lovers. The menu is well-balanced with veggie options so a nice cooked breakfast isn't only an option for carnivores. Urban Angel is also committed to recycling their waste, which is always nice to know. Simon's expert tip: The brunch menu here runs from 9AM to 5PM and you'll find a relaxed atmosphere.
The Timberyard restaurant is housed in a 19th century warehouse in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. It consists of the Warehouse (a light and airy timbered dining area seating 72 people), the Yard (a secluded cobbled courtyard with round tables in the shade of silver birch trees), and the Shed (a cozy stone clad private dining area with a wood burning stove). The restaurant offers a range of modern Scottish cuisine using a mixture of locally sourced artisan produce, foraged ingredients and home-grown produce. They have an onsite butchery, vegetable and herb garden and even smoke their own meat and fish. This family run business with a genuine commitment to sustainability has quickly gained a reputation for innovation and excellence.

Simon's expert tip: Don't miss the chance to try the decadently delicious cocktails made with cordials and syrups produced in-house.
Sushiya is a small, but perfectly formed sushi restaurant which brings a little slice of Tokyo to Edinburgh. The decor is minimalist and stylish, as are the bowls and plates, with the flourish provided by the intricately prepared dishes and garnishes. The food almost looks too good to eat! There is a wide array of sushi on offer with all of the traditional favorites making an appearance, but their teriyaki, ramen and tempura are also superb. Sushiya has a small dining area and their sushi is very much in demand so booking is advisable. They also do a brisk takeaway trade so if you are unable to book ahead you need not be disappointed.
Recommended for Restaurants with Healthy Menus because: Bursting with flavor and yet light on calories, sushi at Sushiya ticks all the right boxes.
Simon's expert tip: The black sesame ice cream is simply wonderful and is enough of a reason to visit on its own.
The Pantry is a relaxed and charming café restaurant on the corner of North West Circus Place in Stockbridge. Set within a refined and graceful Georgian terrace with picture windows offering a view of delightful cobbled streets, this is a great place to indulge in people-watching. The interior combines cool mosaic tiled walls, punctuated by a smattering of contemporary art, with warm wooden tables. The Pantry serves deli style dishes, both hot and cold, but with just a little more panache than your average café or bistro. Locally sourced artisan produce is presented with flair and attention to detail and the menu holds a few delightful surprises for the palate. Given the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is warm and unpretentious.

Styling itself as a healthy fast food restaurant, Flip is a small but perfectly formed cafe and takeaway on Clerk Street. The interior is relaxed and welcoming, with comfortable sofas and simple wooden tables and chairs. The walls are festooned with small but interesting pictures and Saltire bunting hangs from the ceiling. Diners choose naan bread, wraps or Panini and then select a filling from a short but well-populated menu. The supporting cast of homemade soups, salads, baguettes and sandwiches ensures that everyone should find something to their taste. They serve a respectable number of gluten and dairy free options, and if you want to round off your healthy meal with a naughty treat the ice cream sundaes are delightful.
Recommended for Restaurants with Healthy Menus because: Flip serves guilt free and delicious fresh fast food
Simon's expert tip: You can devise your own fillings, but the Flamin' (steak or chicken with raita, peppers, lettuce, jalapeño and chili) is hard to beat
Iglu is a chic and friendly bar restaurant in Edinburgh's New Town. Behind a vibrant green frontage lies a comfortable and welcoming space filled with eclectic art and understated rustic furniture. Deep mulberry walls contrast with large picture windows and clean uncluttered table tops to great effect. Recently named Scottish Sustainable Restaurant of the Year, Iglu wears its organic and sustainable credentials on its sleeve. As well as boasting that an incredible 90 percent of ingredients are locally sourced and organic they make regular charitable donations and have been a passionate supporter of sustainable cooking. It should not surprise that food treated with such care and respect is also prepared and presented beautifully. The menu is not large, but each dish has been carefully chosen and the end result is a feast for the senses that does not stain your conscience or place too much strain on your wallet.
Recommended for Restaurants with Healthy Menus because: At Iglu choosing the healthy, gluten free or celiac friendly options does not mean you have to stint on flavor.
Simon's expert tip: The luxury three course set menu with aperitif, artisan bread and handmade organic truffles is a real treat at an impressively reasonable price.
This was Edinburgh's first vegetarian restaurant, and many still consider it the best. Long, shared tables run the length of the basement room, where candlelight, a nice wine list and live piano or guitar add gracious touches. Meals are self-service, and typically there are eight hot dishes (vegetarian haggis, anyone?) and at least ten salads, in addition to a selection of baked goods and fresh organic produce. The prices are quite reasonable for such a feast. The Henderson's name has expanded over the years to include a bistro, a bakery, a deli, and even a gallery. They are all worth visiting.
Recommended for Restaurants with Healthy Menus because: For delicious and healthy vegetarian and vegan fare, Henderson's is hard to beat.
Simon's expert tip: Henderson's is open until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and you'll find musicians giving performances in the evening.
Earthy in Cannonmills is the latest venture of the champions of organic and seasonal produce who brought us the Earthy shop and café in Causewayside. Located a short walk from the Royal Botanic Gardens and trendy Stockbridge, it effortlessly combines impeccable green credentials with a down to earth and fun loving approach to seasonal cuisine. The interior has a rustic shabby chic air with rough wooden tables and bare light bulbs contrasting with the delightful Alice in Wonderland mural on the main wall. The food is quite delectable and there are numerous little touches which will make you smile from the blood orange and mint water served to welcome you, to the oven warm bread on your table. Whether you opt for a light salad, rich venison, or fresher than fresh seafood your taste buds will thank you for a visit to Earthy.
Recommended for Restaurants with Healthy Menus because: When is a salad not just a salad? When it is an Earthy salad.
Simon's expert tip: It will be hard, but try to leave room for one of their cakes – you will be hard pressed to find better.
