Let’s be honest: when it comes to dance clubs, Salt Lake City is no Las Vegas. Nevertheless, in an urban area of more than 1 million - freakishly active and fit - residents, there is bound to be a thriving population of booty shakers.
And though Salt Lake has no club-lined “Strip,” it certainly has its share of popular clubs - which, more often than not, are filled with great tunes and dancing patrons. And though this particular club has many tough competitors, Area 51 wins City Weekly’s “Best Dance Club” award year after year.
What exactly is it about Area 51 that makes it such a prize-laden establishment? As clubs go, it’s surprisingly welcoming to folks of all tastes and generations. Though it has a chic, industrial atmosphere, it plays a large variety of musical genres, ranging from dub-step to 80’s pop.
Area 51 serves alcohol, but has a designated under-21 area where younger patrons are welcome to dance. The club often houses live DJs, but frequently hosts local bands and nationally-famous musicians. During the summer, it has an open-air rooftop balcony - complete with its own bar - that expands the club’s already large dance floor, and provides sweaty dancers with generous amounts of fresh air.
When visiting Salt Lake City, be sure to check the Area 51’s online schedule. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch a live show.
