Following the mantra "shop local" seems the obvious thing to do in this town, especially around the holidays. While Seattle residents anxiously await the opening of Canal Market (projected date: February), the project's visionary Ericka Burke has dreamt up a plan that will appease shoppers in the meantime.
She's decided to host a pop-up shop right next door to the soon-to-be "modern-day take on an old-fashioned mercantile" in order to bring her collection of curated goods to the Portage Bay neighborhood. The shop, which opens for business at 2917 Fuhrman Ave. E. on Saturday, Nov. 22, will be open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. till 7 p.m., up until Christmas Eve, when the doors shut at 3 p.m.

Within this welcoming space, shoppers will find "a darling array of perfect gifts," a collection of some of Burke's favorite finds that come in especially handy during this gift-giving time of year. Expect to find culinary wares like high-quality olive oils and vinegars, gourmet nut butters, honeys, jams and chocolates. Many tasty treats from Capitol Hill's charming Volunteer Park Cafe will be on offer, including three kinds of Volunteer Park Cafe's famous granola, plus bags of cookies and jars of caramel and chocolate sauce. Other goodies will range from lotions, soaps, aprons and linens to handmade baby and children’s gifts, blankets and toys.
But, wait: this bazaar provides even more ways to deck the halls. At this one-stop pop-up, July Floral contributes holiday bouquets and wreaths, while both Bremelo Press and Dahlia Press bring their "sweet selection of letter pressed stationery, holiday cards and gift-wrap." (Gift-wrapping for purchases made at the shop will be available, too.)

And perhaps most importantly, holiday pies can be ordered and picked up at Canal Market; choose between flavors like Organic Pumpkin, Organic Apple and Chocolate Pecan ($32 each). In order to benefit from caffeine- and pastry-fueled browsing, Slate Coffee espresso drinks and cups of pour-over coffee will be available daily, as will a variety of tasty pastries from Volunteer Park Cafe.
The pop-up space will host three wine tastings on various Tuesdays throughout the holiday season: Nov. 25, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16. All tastings will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and they will showcase some of the wines that Burke believes the perfect complement to a festive holiday table. (All vintages come from boutique wineries and from winemakers Burke admires.)
Whether you're on the hunt for gifts for others or yourself during these jolly, wintertime months, we highly recommend a visit to this newest addition on the Seattle retail scene.
