Ocean City ranks among Maryland's best beaches

The combination of food, fun and a beautiful shoreline makes Ocean City an annual favorite

When talking about Maryland beaches, Ocean City is almost always at the center of the conversation. It’s one of the most popular vacation spots on the East Coast and draws as many as 8 million visitors a year. But with more than nine miles of sandy beaches and an inland filled with shops, restaurants and hotels, there’s more than enough space to accommodate everyone.

One of city’s biggest attractions is the Ocean City Boardwalk, which runs almost the entire length of the beach and is home to some of the best dining and shopping in town. If you’re just looking for a quick snack, try Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard or a famous funnel cake from the Golden Plate. For a more substantial meal, try the fresh seafood at the Captain’s Table or, for those looking for a little spice, any of the Asian fusion dishes as Bombora. You can even cruise the strip while looking for a bite in one of the open-air shuttles that pick up riders all along the Boardwalk.

There’s more to do in Ocean City than eat and work on your tan, however. The two amusement parks on the Boardwalk – Trimper’s Rides on the south end and Jolly Roger Amusement Park to the north – are filled with games, rollercoasters and enough water rides to keep you cool on a hot summer day.

Ocean City is also a great fishing destination, and the “White Marlin Capital of the World” hosts the White Marlin Open fishing tournament every August. Charter fishing trips are also offered by several companies and give visitors a chance to reel in their dinners themselves.

Of course, the main reason most people choose Ocean City for a vacation spot is the beach itself. The long, wide beach offers plenty of space for walking, swimming and playing games. You can also rent a chair and umbrella from a number of vendors and relax in the shade with a cool drink. With the combination of a beautiful shoreline, great food and fun activities, it’s easy to see why Ocean City ranks among Maryland’s best beaches.

About John Houder

After spending his formative years sweating out the long Florida summers in his hometown of Gainesville, John moved to Colorado to study journalism and build his first snowman. The three-day road trip between Gainesville and Boulder became a twice-annual event that allowed him to see the see the country, take a lot of photos and develop a love-hate relationship with Route 66.

John now calls Washington D.C. home, but continues to travel and take pictures in the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, Europe and French Polynesia. He's always on the lookout for good beer, weird food and a funny story.

He may not be a high-powered political advisor or a slick K Street lobbyist, but there's more to Washington, D.C., than politics, and John's intent on finding the best experiences the city has to offer.

John knows a lot about:
1. Food
2. Photography
3. "Seinfeld"

He says “Don’t leave D.C. without seeing the United States Botanic Garden or watching the sunset from the Southwest Waterfront."
