Like his legendary writing style, people have either emulated Ernest Hemingway’s drink of choice or avoided it.
The American author and journalist is most known for his simple and condensed style of writing. But, he was also known for his excessive drinking habits, though he had no qualms admitting it. A constant patron at La Floridita Bar in Havana, Hemingway would boast to those joining him for a drink how much alcohol he would consume.
In fact, he boasted so much so that his favorite daiquiri was named after him, and thus the Papa Doble was born. Proclaimed by Hemingway himself to be the “ultimate achievement of the daiquiri-maker’s art,” he once bragged that he had consumed 16 of the double daiquiris in one night.
Use this recipe to make your own Papa Doble:
Ingredients
2 oz white rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
½ oz fresh grapefruit juice
¼ oz maraschino liqueur
1½ to 2 cups shaved ice
Directions
Combine ingredients in a blender and frappe until the drink is foaming. Serve in a large cocktail glass, champagne saucer, or goblet. Note: maraschino liqueur is NOT the same thing as syrup from a cherry jar. Walk away from any liquor store that tells you otherwise.
