10Best: June's Top Travel Picks

  • San Diego

With average temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s (and very little chance of rain), June is one of the most pleasant months to enjoy a family vacation to sunny, seaside San Diego. The city is packed with kid-centric attractions – the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND and SeaWorld to name a few – and summer crowds haven't yet hit their peak.

  • Coastal Maine

By the time June rolls around Maine's lobster season is in full swing, and since the peak tourist crowds don't hit until July and August, this is the perfect month to head to the coast to gorge on lobster rolls along the state's 3,500-mile coastline.

  • French Riviera

Europeans generally vacation in August, so the beautiful beaches and alfresco cafes of the French Riviera will be delightfully sun-drenched but not overly packed in June.

  • Kansas City

Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City recently opened for the season, which means travelers can cool off on the world's Verrückt, the world's tallest water slide. KC baseball action is in full swing this month, and nothing says "summer" quite like BBQ, which the city has in spades; Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que was recently voted the best BBQ in the South by USA TODAY 10Best readers!

  • Machu Picchu

If there's ever a time to cross Machu Picchu off your bucket list, it's June. You'll have a greater chance of seeing the Incan ruins in the sunshine rather than fog, and you'll have a bit more elbow room before the biggest crowds descend in July and August.

Puerto Vallarta in June sees peak season crowds tapering off, temperatures that haven't become overly warm and sweet hotel deals to make a beach vacation on the Pacific coast of Mexico very affordable.
