The word “Spain” typically brings to mind visions of swimsuits and Mallorca’s warm beaches. However, this southern European country has much more to offer than its sangria and coastline. And trips to this Mediterranean country mustn’t cease with the coming of the winter season. In fact, if you’re willing to put up with cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain, the winter months - with their lack of brutal heat - can provide the most agreeable time to explore the Spanish countryside.

Located near the far southern tip of Spain, just west of Seville, Donana National Park is famous for its vast expanses of flatlands and marshes. Here migratory birds take temporary refuge in the park's diverse ecosystems. A mix of sand dunes, freshwater lakes, marshes and grassy expanses, this is also home to the Iberian lynx. This park sees beautiful seasonal flooding every winter, rendering it a perfect place to visit in the off season.
Canary Islands
Okay, so you prefer warmer temperatures. Consider a trip to the Canary Islands. Even in the depths of winter, these islands enjoy average daytime highs of 70 degrees F and balmy nighttime lows of roughly 60 degrees F. With nearly 1000 miles of coastline, this collection of islands offers unlimited surfing, kayaking, water skiing and sailing.
