10Best: Sugarloaf is for Lovers

Sugarloaf Ski Resort for couples in search of winter recreational fun

There are few ski lodges in northern New England as iconic as Sugarloaf Ski Resort, located in Maine’s rugged Carrabassett Valley. For generations, Sugarloaf has provided couples the kind of downhill Alpine skiing available in few other places.  And apres ski, the resort lends itself to romance.

At 4,237 feet, Sugarloaf offers one of the highest elevations for skiing in New England. In addition, it features the only lift-serviced above treeline skiing in the region. All told, it has an impressive 54 miles of developed trails and a total of 154 miles of trails and glades. For couples seeking winter outdoor adventure skiing fun, Sugarloaf should be a top destination.

One of the main reasons why Sugarloaf has remained so competitive – and desirable – as a ski lodge destination is its focus on meeting current trends and lodging options for couples and families alike. In recent years, it has developed a first-rate terrain park for snowboarders while the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, with its 90 kilometers of groomed cross country ski trails, has become a top destination for New England’s growing population of Nordic skiing enthusiasts. Add to these expanded offerings such activities as ziplines, snow tubing, ice skating, snowshoeing and even an indoor skateboard park and fitness center and you can see why Sugarloaf is so attractive to winter sports enthusiasts.

Responding to this opportunity, Sugarloaf continues to expand upon its extensive lodging options. For instance, the Sugarloaf Inn focuses on attractive, modestly priced rooms with one or two queen-size beds, private bath and coffeemaker.

The decidedly upscale Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel features luxurious one, two and three bedroom suites with queen beds. A penthouse option even features a private sauna and hot tub. Hotel accommodations also feature large screen HD televisions and DVD players in every room, microwave ovens, refrigerators, wetbar, toaster, and coffee pots. In addition, the hotel is located close to most of the mountain’s trails.

These condos have proven to be very popular with skiers who choose to travel from as far away as New York or even the midwest to enjoy Sugarloaf.

For skiers seeking to unwind after a long day on the slopes, Sugarloaf is host to several dining options including the Shipyard Brewhaus Restaurant brew pub at the Sugarloaf Inn. Meanwhile, fine dining is available at the Double Diamond Steakhouse at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel.
