Colonial Williamsburg is the nation's largest living history museum where historical reenactors work, dress and talk as they would have in the 18th century capital of colonial Virginia. The draw for families is simple; it's easy for all ages to wander the grounds, learn and have fun together. However, there is so much to do in the historic and surrounding areas that a multi-day visit is highly recommended.

What Kids and Parents Love

Let the kids enthusiastically slip into character by renting a costume and watch them interact with residents via fun, hands-on activities. They'll play as kids did prior to electronics, make real bricks, tend a plantation, learn trades, run through a big maze behind the Governor's Palace and more--all while absorbing important history and life lessons. Older kids are certain to remember their Revolutionary War facts after immersing themselves in the period, too.

Parents enjoy a history refresher, museums featuring art and antiques, exploring community spaces and colonial homes, and wandering the area with happy kids. Not to be missed is the two-day saga live performance of events surrounding the Revolutionary War (see video below for more details). After a full day, return the family to a nearby world-class hotel, indulge in a spa treatment, play a round of golf or shop.

Helpful Tips

Visits should begin at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center where guests receive help planning an itinerary, reserve tickets for special events, rent costumes and redeem tickets purchased online.

Because the historic sites are small, if you have a stroller, you'll be asked to leave it outside. It's free to walk through Colonial Williamsburg, but you will need a ticket to enter the buildings or attend outdoor performances. If you're already soaking up history in Washington D.C., Colonial Williamsburg makes a great day trip.

A Win-Win Destination

Colonial Williamsburg provides the best of both worlds--a unique opportunity to step back in time and then return to the 21st century when ready.
