The Lodge Resort and Spa in Cloudcroft, NM sits high atop the Sacramento Mountains, an historical treasure of this 110 year old pioneer town. In the late 1800s, the demand for timber brought a newly extended railroad and plenty of loggers from the desert setting of Alamogordo to 8,900' high Cloudcroft.
It soon became apparent the tiny mountain town would be a popular tourist destination. And that it was, its cool mountain air attracting folks from Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma who wanted to beat the heat in summer. After the town's first hotel was built, the more upscale Lodge Resort was constructed, offering elegant accommodations and dining atop the mountains overlooking White Sands (and later, one of the highest elevated golf courses in the country).

With the new influx of people and money, however, came drama. Legend has it that Rebecca, a young chambermaid at the Lodge, was the victim of a murder brought on by jealous rage. Her lover allegedly found her in the arms of another man, and the burly lumberjack who had thought she was true to him, killed her. Today it's said that her ghost often still flirtatiously and harmlessly frequents the hotel, supposedly looking for a new companion. Reported happenings at the Lodge include ashtrays moving across tables, fireplaces suddenly starting and lights turning on and off . . . all attributed to the ghost of Rebecca.

The Lodge is so fond of its resident ghost that its main restaurant is named for her. Offering fine dining and a lovely Sunday brunch, Rebecca's, with its beautiful view of the valley, also has a nice lounge and a grand piano, live music offered on the weekends. Be sure to see the stained glass window with Rebecca's portrait at the entrance and see if you can find the carved tree with her image. Also, a must is visiting the turret, which requires asking for a key to its entrance from the front desk staff. Somehow when climbing up to this secret getaway, this intimate quiet loft seems like an ideal spot for Rebecca to appear. Maybe you'll be the one who gets to meet her next.
