Throughout North America, the winter season offers the opportunity for travelers to swap flip-flops for ice skates and glide across the frozen water. The historic Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, snakes its way through the Canadian capital. In winter, the canal transforms into the world's largest skating rink, winding for almost 5 miles through Ottawa. Skaters enjoy rest areas, fire pits, picnic tables and vendors selling sweets, snacks and steaming hot chocolate.
Best Zoo Lights: Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo

Each winter, zoos across the U.S. get into the holiday spirit. The 2017 installment of Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo features more than 1 million holiday lights and some 200 illuminated animal images, as well as bumper cars, an ice slide, photo ops with Santa and an 85-foot Norway spruce tree decorated with 35,000 LED bulbs. Mom and dad can even grab a spiked beverage from the Beer Garden.
Best Holiday Parade: Mummers Parade in Philadelphia

The Mummers Parade, one of the longest running traditions in the nation, has roots dating back to the 1800s as a celebration of the New Year in Philly. The colorful procession along Broad Street features performances by comics, string bands and fancy brigades in their spectacular costumes.
Best Department Store: Neiman Marcus

According to our shopping expert Taryn Scher, Neiman Marcus is "where any girl should go to dream about the life she wants." Ruta Fox adds that the luxury department store headquartered in Dallas with 41 locations around the USA represents "fashion at its most sophisticated."
Best Theme Park Holiday Event: An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City

Branson's Silver Dollar City gets decked in 6.5 million colorful, twinkling lights during its annual holiday celebration, An Old Time Christmas. Festivities center around a 5-story-tall special effects Christmas tree, with 1,000 other decorated trees around the park, two Broadway-style holiday productions and an illuminated parade featuring Rudolph and his reindeer friends.
Best Place to Ring in the New Year: Nashville

Music City's NYE bash at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park is free and open to the public, with headlining acts like Keith Urban, Maren Morris and Cheap Trick performing as crowds await the dropping of the giant music note and fireworks to ring in the new year.
