Lit buffs will want to head to the West Coast this fall to experience what are without question some of the top literary festivals in the world, a fact that should come as no surprise since the two cities in question here (Portland and San Francisco) are famous for their bookstores.
Litquake, which is held from October 5-13, takes place in San Francisco, and its goal is to "whet a broad range of literary appetites." It unquestionably succeeds in this with a stunning variety of events held at various venues across the city.
Wordstock, held in Portland from October 11-14, has a bit more of an academic bent, with a focus on workshops and education, but it's every bit as fun. The Wordstock Book Fair features stunning deals and rare finds, and the Wordstock Literal Fun event showcases the best of Portland's contemporary writers and cuisine.
