    Cafe Privato

In the heart of Galata, just steps from the Galata Tower sits the adorable Cafe Privato. Get the full Turkish breakfast, and they’ll take care of the rest, likely bringing out each specific dish on its own, gorgeous ornamental plate. The atmosphere is quaint and perfect for a weekend morning. Notably, they aren’t scared to change things up, so expect different jams and fruit preserves on each occasion.

    Nezih Kebap Yuvalama

In Istanbul, any cab driver in the city will know what you’re talking about if you simply say, "Nezih." This is where you should go if you’re only eating one breakfast in the city, but just be sure to bring your appetite. The views of the Bosphorus are astounding, but not nearly as astounding as Nezih’s take on pişi, which is basically a Turkish donut. It’s a bit more expensive than the rest, but they’ll keep bringing out plates until you turn them away, so you certainly get the bang for your buck.

    Çeşme Bazlama Kahvaltı

If you’re looking for a truly beautiful breakfast, you’ll find it at Çeşme Bazlama Kahvaltı. The food is fresh and delicious, but it’s the presentation and aesthetics that will suck you in. The decor is very emblematic of the fact that the restaurant is located in one of Istanbul’s most chic and exclusive neighborhoods, Nişantaşı. It would not be unusual for you to have fifteen or so dishes on the table at one time, and with its uplifting turquoise interior, you might find you never want to leave.

    Van Kahvaltı Evi

Van is a relatively large city in Eastern Turkey which is famous for its approach to breakfast in both Turkey and the world over. "Van Kahvaltı Evi" literally translates to "Van Breakfast House," which means they’re bringing the Eastern touch on breakfast to Istanbul's arguably hippest neighborhood, Cihangir. It’s a match made in heaven. Expect quick service, fresh bread and even fresher honey.

    Mangerie

Located in Bebek, right on the Bosphorus, Mangerie does things a little differently. There’s no question they’re able to check all the boxes when it comes to the classics, but they also aren’t scared to add their own modern twist. They’re downright adventurous with their array of fruit juices, and their take on eggs Benedict is worth the try!

    Emirgan Sütiş

Emirgan Sütiş is a staple, a truly traditional restaurant that is beloved by the community. Initially, it was a place only focused on Turkish milk pudding, but slowly evolved into much more, including Turkish breakfast.  Since the family has been in the business of cakes, pastries, and sweets since the 1850's, this might be the best place to delve into some sweets during breakfast – because they know what they’re doing. They also produce their own honey, clotted cream, butter, cheeses and more, so they have a huge emphasis on organic.

    Namlı Gurme

Located in Istanbul’s ever-eccentric Karaköy neighborhood, Namlı Gurme is the perfect place to deepen your understanding of Turkish cuisine. It’s as much a restaurant as a market which has an area to sit down, but this allows you to walk around and take a peek at hundreds of traditional dishes and foods. The breakfast itself is also heavy on Turkish meats and cheeses, so it’s nice and filling.

    Galata Konak Cafe

On a sunny morning in Istanbul, you’d be hard pressed to find a better spot than the rooftop patio of the Galata Konak Cafe. The food is quality and the service is quick, but it’s the panoramic view of Istanbul that you'll never forget about this place. Get here early on weekend mornings, as it gets packed.

    Pare Baklava Bar

In Istanbul, a baklava bar is typically focused on, well, baklava, but not in the case of Pare. They’ve got a traditional Turkish breakfast replete with all the works, and some nice touches like fresh walnuts, homemade warm bread, and top-quality börek. If you’re there, you also need to try the katmer, a local Antep dessert with milk cream inside. They’ve actually got a traditional breakfast option that includes katmer, so you’re in luck!

    Tarihi Bilice Börekçisi

This isn’t in central Istanbul, but many people would argue it’s worth every second of the drive it takes to get out to Tarihi Bilice Börekçisi, situated in the Belgrad Forest. If you’ve got lots of time in Istanbul, go for a long walk in the forest, work up an appetite, and end your stroll at the restaurant. Their breakfast in general is good, but, as the name might suggest, their börek is absolutely off the charts.

In Turkey, breakfast is a meal that's rich in flavor and steeped in tradition. A true Turkish breakfast is an art form, where restaurants need to adhere to the staple offerings, but also add their personal flair. Istanbul and its residents take it rather seriously, but it's clear that some restaurants are exceeding expectations.

If you're headed to Istanbul and in search of the perfect Turkish breakfast, you'll be looking for a number of things. A Turkish breakfast almost always has a selection of cheeses ranging from sharp cheeses like beyaz peynir to softer, subtler cheeses like kaşar.

Your table should be packed with plates of varying sizes. The smaller plates are for Turkish breakfast necessities like butter, olives, jams and honey while the slightly larger plates accommodate things like tomatoes and cucumbers. You might also find all of these together on a platter of sorts.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Turkish breakfast is all about the confluence of sweet and savory in an attempt to achieve ultimate breakfast satisfaction. It gets even better when you bring in hot offerings like menemen (which is, essentially, scrambled eggs and tomato) and savory pastries filled with meat, cheese or vegetable,s such as börek and gözleme.

At almost every Turkish breakfast table, you'll also find simit, a circular, bagel-like sesame-crusted bread, and it's every bit as delicious as it sounds.

With Turkish breakfast, it's important to take your time and understand that the dishes will often come out intermittently, simply because they can't fit that many plates on the table. At the end of the meal, don't rush off. Rather, sip on Turkish tea, known as çay, or have yourself a kahve (Turkish coffee).

It's worth noting that Turkish breakfast is known in Turkish as kahvaltı, which literally translates to "before coffee," so have your breakfast, then your coffee and appreciate a tradition which has been thriving for centuries.
