A stroll through the grounds of Waterbury, Vermont's Ben & Jerry's factory will lead you to the land of the long departed-flavors. Nestled within the gates of the Flavor Graveyard, you'll find the final resting place of the many pints of pleasure that have been laid to rest over the years.
What began in 1978 out of a renovated gas station as a fun way for two friends who liked to eat to make a living has become a national phenomenon that has paved the way for flavor exploration in the ice cream world. Far from your basic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, Ben & Jerry's rich and creamy base is loaded with mix-ins and sold in shops, and supermarkets far and wide. A visit to their factory gives you the chance to explore the inner workings of this ice cream mecca, and the ghosts of ice cream past.
Take a tour, enjoy their play area, roam the grounds, sample the living flavors then pay your respects to the flavors you miss seeing on store shelves and in your local scoop shop as you enter the gates of the Flavor Graveyard. The eerie scene will suck you in and leave you feeling a bit like you've entered an eternal Halloween. Read the witty tributes on the headstones, find out how long each flavor lived, and before you leave be sure to say your final goodbyes.
Waterbury is located about three hours northwest of Boston.
