Spas are more determined than ever to break out of the traditional facial/massage mold and entice guests with all sorts of odd ways to cut stress and beautify.
But while stimulating our senses and relaxing our aching muscles in nontraditional ways may sound a bit kooky, wellness experts swear some of these treatments will rid out yucky toxins and make our skin glow.
Who knew the key to unlocking the fountain of youth may just come from smearing blueberries, honey, dirt, wine–or even bird poo–on ourselves? So for those with a little sense of adventure (and maybe a strong stomach), these bizarre spa treatments may be the next thing to try during your travels.

Knock, knock! During the Manaka Tapping Treatment a wooden peg is placed on a specific acupuncture point and then struck rhythmically with a light wooden hammer to the calculated beat of a metronome. During this session, pressure pain localized on a specific meridian is relieved when points on the channel are stimulated at a certain number of beats-per-minute. Spa therapists say this treatment helps to relive pain and a euphoric sense of well being takes over.
Spa-goers are prepped for metamorphosis with a hydrating application of aloe vera, a soak in a nourishing milk bath and an application of frangipani, monoi and coconut oil to soothe and replenish sun-stressed skin. Guests then are enveloped in a warm cocoon, where they experience ultimate tranquility with a calming scalp and face aromatherapy massage.

Off-beat travelers searching for an out-of-this world treatment are in luck. Spa therapists will first take a photo to analyze energies and auras present in the guest. Spa-goers are then treated to a soothing exfoliation and detoxifying clay body wrap, during which music, light, heat and aromatherapies relax the body and help achieve balance and harmony.
Pure Gold Facial
The facial uses cellular radiance concentrate serum, which is enriched with pure gold, and visibly firms and tones skin making it shine with new energy. The use of gentle, warm face masks enhances the effectiveness of the serum, allowing skin to take on a smoother, more radiant and more vibrant appearance.

Who knew a scale could look so bizarre? While not really a spa treatment, this test pod is popping up at wellness facilities as a sure way to figure out body composition. A quick five-minute session in this egg-shaped plethysmograph will reveal what your body really needs.

This sweet treatment dates back to the days of Cleopatra. Using local honey, it begins with the full-body massage followed by a scrumptious honey and apricot scrub to refresh and renew.

How about taking a three-minute visit to a cold chamber set at -60°C? Some scientists believe cryotherapy can reduce stress, improve sleep disorders and dramatically improve jet lag symptoms.
