Improve your health and wellness at this beautiful retreat

  • Secluded retreat in the hills of Southern California

No, this is not Greece, Provence or Tuscany. It’s the Olympic-size swimming pool and pool house of the luxurious Cal-a-Vie Health Spa, nestled in the rolling hills and vineyards some 40 miles north of San Diego. There’s a good reason the spa is a favorite retreat for Hollywood stars seeking wellness in a private and secluded setting. The pool is kept at ideal temperatures year-round and is used not only for swimming, but for a variety of aquatic fitness exercises – or just simply relaxing in the California sun.

  • Fit for a king or queen

You’ll feel like royalty nestled in your luxurious bed and surrounded by nothing but the sounds of nature in a completely bucolic setting. Cal-a-Vie boasts 32 Mediterranean-styled guest villas with a 5:1 staff-to-guest ratio, giving real-time meaning to the adage, "your wish is my command."

  • Stroll past authentic 18th-century French buildings

What makes the Cal-a-Vie health spa especially unique is its authentic European ambiance. And when we say authentic, we mean it. Several buildings from the early 18th century, originally part of the Convent of the Carmelites in Dijon, France, were saved from demolition by Cal-a-Vie owners, philanthropists and entrepreneurs Terri and John Havens. Each stone was meticulously labeled and numbered for shipment from France to Cal-a-Vie, where they were carefully reconstructed on the spa grounds.

Cal-a-Vie Health Spa offers walks, hikes, 100+ exercise classes, and over 20 different mind-body-spirit classes and treatments (including acupuncture and pain relief) in a serene setting.

  • A taste of honey

There is no doubt, the gardens, hiking paths and beautiful vistas are all a part of the Cal-a-Vie spa experience. In San Diego County, winter just means warm days and cooler nights. A wide variety of beautiful semi-tropical plants grow here year-round. It's no wonder this spa haven, among many amenities, has its own beehive and produces delicious honey to serve its guests.

  • Photographer's delight

There are endless hiking paths along the spa’s 500 acres of private land, and you never know what beauty will meet your eyes.  If you love photography, you’ll certainly not want for fabulous photo opportunities. As we hiked the trails, we captured a late afternoon view of the winter moon rising over an 18th-century French windmill. Magnifique!

  • Take home recipes

Not only can you enjoy excellent low-calorie cuisine during your spa experience, you can learn to recreate these same recipes at home. Cooking classes are readily available and conducted by the spa’s executive chef and a dietician, who will guide you through the process step by step.

Lovers of "the game of kings" can enjoy a round of golf at the luxurious, Ted Robinson-designed championship golf course at the Vista Valley Country Club, part of the Cal-a-Vie Spa complex.  Afterwards, plan to relax and wind down with a signature massage at the spa.

  • Back to nature

This hummingbird seems to be enjoying the scenery during our hike in the hills above the Cal-A-Vie health spa. The lush vegetation of the area is filled with flowers and natural flora of all sorts. It's a mecca for the birds and wildlife that make this area their home.

  • You won't notice you're on a "diet"

1,500 calories a day never looked, or tasted, so good! Guests can choose between several daily caloric limits and each meal will be designed with this in mind.  The spa’s kitchen will also accommodate any diet preference, from vegan to paleo, and everything in between.

  • Farm-to-table, right on site

Many of the fruit, vegetables and spices used in the spa’s kitchen are grown steps away on the property’s organic farm. Executive Chef Curtis Cooke is a master of healthy cooking techniques that result in an amazing culinary experience without excess calories. The chef also enjoys working with guests through his hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations.

  • Star light, star bright

Chances are, you’ve never stayed at a health spa that boasts its very own observatory. Cal-a-Vie’s secluded location in the hills of San Diego’s North County, away from city lights, makes it a perfect spot to explore the nocturnal heavens. Conducted by a local astronomer, the spa offers an educational lecture and slideshow, as well as stargazing opportunities through the observatory telescope.

  • Dine back in time

Have an unforgettable experience in Cal-a-Vie's reception hall, which happens to be the reconstruction of the original L'Orangerie built in Lyon, France in 1710. This historic and artistic building not only serves as a special dining venue for spa guests, but is also available for weddings and corporate events. Can you imagine exchanging your vows in such an historic site?

  • Raise a glass

Experience a wine tasting in an authentic 18th-century French building – in the hills of San Diego County! Originally constructed in France in 1715, the Parish House was rescued from destruction by the Cal-a-Vie owners and was shipped, piece by piece, to the hill site above the spa.  Reconstruction was completed in June 2018 and the "Presbitaire" was opened for guests to enjoy the distinctive estate wine of Chateau Cal-a-Vie.

  • In vino veritas

Cal-a-Vie’s sommelier toasts to guests as he pours and describes some outstanding wines produced on the spa’s vast estate.

There’s no better place to watch the sun set over the verdant Southern California hills than from your luxurious lounge chair at the Cal-a-Vie pool.
