    The crown jewel of this town is the Loreto Mission, founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries. It is considered the origin of all missions in Baja California, and led to the establishment of the missions in what is now California. Step inside to marvel at the magnificent gilded altar surrounding 17th century paintings. The Museum of Missions is adjacent to the church and contains a fascinating display of religious artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries with a self-guided tour in both English and Spanish.
