Copenhagen had to do without its landmark Hotel D'Angleterre in 2012. Now, this historic five-star hotel has reopened after a comprehensive renovation, refurbished and grander than ever before.
Copenhagen's best known hotel is a landmark building on Kongens Nytorv and dates from 1755. For more than 250 years, the place has been synonymous with luxury, glamour and elegance. Its eminent guests included everyone from Madonna and Michael Jackson to Winston Churchill and H.C. Andersen, who have all appreciated the hotel's skillful discretion.

Over the years, however, the hotel had become a little old-fashioned and needed modernizing throughout. In order to achieve this, it was necessary to close the premises entirely from May 2011 to May 2013 for the most ambitious hotel restoration in Danish history.
At a cost rumored to be upwards of 80 million dollars, the renovations included all of the 90 rooms, of which 53 are now classed as suites, including the legendary Royal Suite and Themed Suite, as well as the Palm Court and Louis XVI Ballroom, two lavish venues memorable for a number of historic events, including royal galas.
The hotel's acting director announced that the 'soft opening' would involve 35 rooms, with the remaining rooms opening in the fall.
Even those who can only dream of affording a stay at the Hotel D'Angleterre have been able to enjoy dining in the hotel restaurant, which has reopened under the new name of Marchal, after the hotel's founders Jean Marchal and Maria Coppy. Meanwhile at the back of the hotel, contemporary champagne bar Balthazar serves a huge variety of champagnes, champagne cocktails and classic cocktails.
