Chances are you never heard the term 'bomb cyclone' before yesterday. But if you're on the East Coast today, you've probably become a little too familiar with what seems to be the scientific term for 'wretched, frozen nightmare.'

It's cold. Like, really cold. And windy. And there are snowflakes the size of dimes (but hey, at least the cars haven't turned the snow brown yet). Basically, if you don't have to go outside don't. Instead, stay in the confines of your (hopefully) centrally heated home and make this mulled mine. It will heat up your body – and your soul.


  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 orange zested and juiced
  • 3 cups apple cider (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brandy


  1. Simmer all ingredients other than brandy on stove for between 15 minutes and one hour.
  2. Add brandy (optional). Remove from heat and let cool to a drinkable temperature, then serve.
